Celebrated chef, restaurateur and cookbook author Sami Tamimi began his career at the age of seventeen. At that time, the Palestinian-born had a job at the “Mount Zion” hotel in Jerusalem, actually as a porter. Nonetheless he was quickly appointed cook and was eventually responsible for breakfast at the hotel. Tamimi’s passion for food was awakened. To gain as much experience as possible, he worked in various restaurants, cafés and even in a hospital kitchen. At the age of twenty-one, he moved to Tel Aviv, built up a catering business and became head chef at “Lilith”, at that time one of Israel's most renowned restaurants. In 1997, Tamimi eventually moved to London, where he was able to demonstrate his creativity and talent at the deli “Baker & Spice”. This is where he met Yotam Ottolenghi, and together they opened the first Ottolenghi Deli in Notting Hill in 2002. The rest is history. Today, in addition to five branches of the deli, the dream team opened two restaurants in London: the “Nopi” and the “Rovi”. The duo has also written two highly acclaimed cookbooks. Tamimi wrote his third cookbook, “Falastin”, together with Tara Wigly. It was distinguished with the “Fortnum & Mason Cookery Book of the Year 2021” award, among others.
